This week is one of the highlights of the European Calendar and as ever a strong field lines up at Wentworth. The course is a classic parkland track and is a 7300 yard par 72. A number of changes have been made in recent years, especially Ernie Els’ controversial butchering of the 18th. The course certainly favours the longer hitters and the four par 5s are there for the taking. Luke Donald has won the last two. The 2012 event was dominated by the hot, dry weather. I think the course might be a little softer this time round.
Name | Odds | Bookmaker | |
---|---|---|---|
Paul Lawrie | 1.5pt each way 66-1 | Stan James |
Finishing position: T72 Back Paul Lawrie Again |
Paul hasn’t really got going this season but the signs are there. He’s in solid cut-making form and his T14 at the China Open shows he’s moving in the right direction. He’s had a 6th and a 2nd in the last three years here and the course obviously suits. If the wind gets up then he’s really in the game. We think he’s well worth a punt this week at a decent price. | |||
David Howell | 1.5pt each way 110-1 | Bet365 |
Finishing position: T72 Back David Howell Again |
David is really turning himself into Mr. Consistency this season. He’s had a string of high finishes over the last year and missed almost no cuts. The course is not overly long which will suit and don’t forget his 2006 victory here. We reckon Howell is in the ‘winner about to happen’ category. We have no fears about the state of his game at the moment and he’s going to have some positive thoughts about returning to the scene of his greatest triumph. We can see a contending performance this week. | |||
Alvaro Quiros | 1pt each way 200-1 | Stan James |
Finishing position: T32 Back Alvaro Quiros Again |
Alvaro has had a torrid time with injuries over the last year and is on the slow road to recovery. At his best he’s a mega-long hitter, proven winner and a fearless competitor who can literally overpower a course. The par 5s at Wentworth are there for the taking and if there’s a venue where he can get his season started then this is it. A good T10 last season when hopelessly out of sorts and solid long term form make a tiny nibble at big odds worth a shot. |
All quoted odds correct as of 19:00 on 20/05/2013. These are obviously subject to fluctuation.
