This is the first ever staging of the Tshwane Open in South Africa. The course is a monster par 72 of 7791 yards. Interestingly the par 5s measure 685, 607, 658 and 597 yards. It seems there won’t be many eagles this week! The fairways are pretty wide and this clearly sets up best for the longer hitters. It’s a very weak field this week with Jaco Van Zyl (no wins in 76 European Tour starts but Sunshine Tour win last week) the early favourite. This is the last of six Tour events in South Africa – four have been won by South Africans. It would seem a big hitting South African is the obvious choice! But we’re going for a Spaniard.

Finishing position: MC Back Pablo Larrazabal Again |
One name jumps out looking down the list of odds in such a weak field. Two time tour winner Pablo Larrazabal looks cracking value at 50-1. An aggressive player who has steadily increased in stature on tour, there is nobody in the field that this guy is going to fear. He’s 30 in may and should be hitting the peak of his career. The course should suit well and if he finds a bit of form then he’s certainly not afraid to win. Larrazabal is far too good a player to be anything like 50-1 in a field like this. Keep an eye on David Drysdale – narrowly edged out as this week’s tip. |
