This week we find ourselves in Akron, Ohio for the WGC Bridgestone, the latest World Golf Championship event. The tournament is held on the South Course at Firestone Country Club and is a par 70 of 7400 yards. The fairways are tree lined and keeping the ball in play is a significant advantage here. The solid ball-strikers tend to prosper. Keegan Bradley is the defending Champion thanks to a final hole Jim Furyk blow up in 2012. 49 of the World’s top 50 are due to attend (only Oosthuizen is out). Tiger Woods is the favourite and has posted seven wins at Firestone over the years.
NOTE: No bookmakers offers this week – presumably due to the restricted field of 73 starters.
Name | Odds | Bookmaker | |
---|---|---|---|
Bo Van Pelt | 1.5pt each way 100-1 | Stan James |
Finishing position: T21 Back Bo Van Pelt Again |
Bo has had a steady season and is in solid cut-making form. His highlight this season is a T6 at the Wells Fargo which sets up nicely for sold ball strikers. Van Pelt is certainly one of those and it’s no coincidence that his three Firestone starts have yielded T3-T23-T8. He looks a good bet this week at pretty long odds on a course that requires accuracy off both tee and fairway | |||
Steve Stricker | 2pt each way 33-1 | Bet365 |
Finishing position: T13 Back Steve Stricker Again |
Steve has cut down his schedule this year but is playing as well as ever. 6-9-14-2 are great form stats at Firestone and he looks a solid bet this week. He’s had a T8 and T10 in his last two starts this season and he’s thrown in a couple of second places this season. This guy is well capable of winning this week on a course that sets up well for his accurate hitting. | |||
Martin Laird | 1pt each way 125-1 | Stan James |
Finishing position: T48 Back Martin Laird Again |
Martin has had an eventful few weeks. A nice punter friendly finish at the Scottish Open was followed by a contending 36 holes at the Open. A quintuple bogey ended that. Anyway, there doesn’t seem a lot wrong with Laird’s game at the moment and he has promising form figures here (T16-T11-T29) which suggests a small wager at big odds is worth the risk. |
