Arguably the biggest tournament of the year arrives this week with the 144th Open Championship. The Old Course at St. Andrews is the venue and it’s pretty familiar to most of us. It’s a 7300 yard par 72 with generous fairways, light rough and vast double greens. Scoring should be low and the course will be softer than the R&A would like. Rory McIlroy won last year but is unable to defend this time around through a footballing injury.

Bubba Watson | 2pt each way 33-1 | PaddyPower TOP SEVEN |
Finishing position: MC Back Bubba Watson Again |
We think Bubba offers some value this week. He’s in good form and is 3rd in the Fedex Cup. Simply, if he’s going to win the Open anywhere it will be here. St’ Andrews is a bomber’s paradise and he’ll reach all the par 5s and some of the par 4s. We think he’s got as good a chance as anyone this week on a course that’s right up his alley.
J. B. Holmes | 2pt each way 33-1 | BetVictor TOP SIX |
Finishing position: MC Back J. B. Holmes Again |
Sticking with the bombers theme we’re having a punt on JB this week. He’s right at the top of his game and the wide open spaces and soft conditions of St. Andrews plays right into the hands of the 33 year old from Kentucky. He might be a huge prices but he’s 9th in the Fedex Cup and the World No. 13. He won at Houston and had four rounds in the 60s last time out at the Greenbrier. The cherry on the cake is his T14 at St. Andrews in 2010 and he’s a better player now.
Branden Grace | 2pt each way 50-1 | Boylesports TOP SIX |
Finishing position: T20 Back Branden Grace Again |
Branden has conquered the European Tour over the last few years with a string of wins. He’s showing signs of evolving into a World class player. What really catches the eye is his performance at the US Open where he still had a chance to win standing on the 16th tee. He’s in great form once again this season and we see no reason why he cannot throw up another contending performance on a course that suits him down to the ground having won The Dunhill Links Championship here in 2012. |
