This week’s stop on the PGA Tour is what most people regard as the fifth Major – The Players Championship. This event features one of the strongest fields of the year and is always played at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. This is an extremely tricky course and features the famous par 3 17th hole with its island green. This combined with the treacherous 18th makes for an extremely demanding finish – many hopes have found a watery grave over the years! It’s a 7200 yard par 72 and length off the tee seems to offer no real advantage. The Bermuda greens are very small and extremely fast. The absent Tiger Woods triumphed in 2013.

Zach Johnson | 2pt each way 40-1 | Bet365 1/4 ODDS TOP SIX |
Finishing position: T26 Back Zach Johnson Again |
We think Zach has a leading chance this week on a course where he’s got some solid ling term form. He’s been a little quiet of late but has still managed T6 and last week’s T14 in his last four starts. The course sets up well and he’s only ever missed one cut here. 22-12-2-19 is good recent form and we’re happy to get on him this week at a good price.
Lee Westwood | 2pt each way 33-1 | PaddyPower 1/4 ODDS TOP SIX |
Returned 3.65pts for T6 place finish!
Back Lee Westwood Again |
It was good to see Lee notch his first win for two years a couple of weeks ago and it’s been coming for a little while. He had a good showing at the Masters and seems to be finding his game nicely. Sawgrass suits his world class tee-to-green game well and the fact that this isn’t going to be a birdie-fest will count in his favour too. He’s not often available at prices like this and, taking his two top 10s in his last three starts here, he’s well worth a punt this week.
Martin Laird | 1pt each way 90-1 | Bet365 1/4 ODDS TOP SIX |
Finishing position: MC Back Martin Laird Again |
Martin’s had a tough start to 2014 having missed his last three cuts prior to his T30 last week at Quail Hollow. However, he is a guy who can find form quickly and he certainly has eye catching results at Sawgrass. He’s gone T2-T5 in hs last two starts here and will enter this week with a very positive vibe! We think it’s worth a small punt to see if his Sawgrass love affair continues for another year. |
