The Sony Open is the first full field event on the PGA Tour in 2014. Waialae is a fairly narrow, 7068 yard, short par 70 course that usually favours the more accurate hitters. A glance down the previous winners shows the type of players who prosper here: Wagner, Mark Wilson, Choi, Goydos, Zach Johnson. Any of the par 70 specialists are worthy of consideration. Russell Henley was the sensational winner here 12 months ago.

Charles Howell III | 2pt each way 25-1 | Stan James |
Finishing position: T8 Back Charles Howell III Again |
Charles is a good all round player who seems to lack the killer instinct when in contention. He should have won way more than his two PGA Tour titles. If he’s going to win this season it’s probably going to be the Sony Open. Simply, he’s had seven punter friendly finishes in his last twelve starts here. 25-1 won’t be around long and he’s a must back at that price.
Brian Gay | 2pt each way 50-1 | Coral |
Finishing position: T32 Back Brian Gay Again |
Brian had a steady 2013 with a win at the Humana the highlight. He tends to go well at the start of the season and he had three good rounds at Kapalua on a course that doesn’t suit. Waialae is absolutely up his street with his accurate driving and silky putting touch. He’s have shaken off that winter rust a week early and we think he’s a solid bet here where he’s posted a number of decent finishes in the past.
Rory Sabbatini | 2pt each way 60-1 | Stan James |
Finishing position: MC Back Rory Sabbatini Again |
Rory is a real up and down player but showed signs late in 2013 that he was getting back to his best form. He’s certainly well overdue his seventh tour win. He had a nice T3 in his last outing at Mayakoba and we see no reason why he can’t contend this week. He’s made his last nine cuts at the Sony with two 2nd places in that time. We think he’s worth a small each way punt this week. |
