The first event on the PGA Tour in 2014 is a restricted field event featuring all the winners in 2013 (or at least those who want to turn up). Some of the big names who would be eligible to play are missing (Woods, Mickelson) so this one looks pretty wide open. In fact, half the field has never played the event before.
The Plantation Course at Kapalua is a wide open par 73 of 7411 yards with the 663 yard par 5 18th the signature hole. Wind can be a factor but the course should suit the longer hitters. Dustin Johnson won last year’s windy event.
Name | Odds | Bookmaker | |
---|---|---|---|
Martin Laird | 2pt each way 28-1 | Bet365 |
Finishing position: 20 Back Martin Laird Again |
Martin is a regular winner and has featured twice in the Tournament of Champions. He’s managed 2nd and 4th place finishes in 2012 and 2010 respectively. He’s certainly going to be at home if the breeze gets up and looks a decent bet to feature in such a small field. We’d back him to continue his good work at Kapalua and another win is by no means out of the question. | |||
Jonas Blixt | 2pt each way 40-1 | Bet365 |
Finishing position: T21 Back Jonas Blixt Again |
In a field where half the competitors have never played the event, it’s inevitable that a few are going to feature in the upper echelons of the leaderboard. However, we think Jonas offers some reasonable possibilities in an event where value is hard to find. He played in 2013, finishing 18th, but we don’t pay much attention to that in an event that was reduced to Mickey Mouse status due to the weather. Nevertheless, he’ll have had a useful look at the course and we think his long hitting will set up well. | |||
Chris Kirk | 2pt each way 33-1 | Bet365 |
Finishing position: T16 Back Chris Kirk Again |
Chris is probably the nearest we’ve got to a form horse this week, having won last time out. Factor in his T7 in his only other Kapalua effort and we feel his current offering of 33-1 represents pretty good value in a field of this size. We think there’s enough going for Kirk this week to have a small punt. |
